The Election Commission of India (ECI) has ordered the immediate suspension of Tarn Taran Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Dr Ravjot Kaur Grewal. The directive was issued on Saturday through an official communication addressed to the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), Punjab, citing the ongoing byelection to the Tarn Taran Assembly constituency.
According to the order, Amritsar Commissioner of Police Gurpreet Singh Bhullar, has been given the additional charge of SSP Tarn Taran with immediate effect. The ECI has also sought a compliance report from the Punjab Government without delay.
Punjab Chief Electoral Officer Sibin C confirmed the development to True Scoop News, saying the suspension order was issued by the Commission on November 8 and implemented promptly.
The move, reportedly, follows a series of complaints received by the Election Commission concerning Dr Grewal’s functioning during the byelection process. The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) had earlier lodged a formal complaint against her, alleging partisan conduct and demanding her removal. The ECI, after reviewing the complaint and related inputs, directed her immediate suspension.
The Commission’s order, signed by Secretary Suman Kumar Das, emphasizes the need to maintain neutrality and transparency in law enforcement during the electoral process. It is also marked to the Punjab Chief Secretary for compliance.
Dr Ravjot Kaur Grewal, a 2013-batch IPS officer, had been serving as SSP Tarn Taran since earlier this year.
