Fire breaks out on Amritsar-Saharsa Garib Rath Express at Sirhind Station

Officials confirmed that no major injuries or casualties occurred during the incident.

A major incident occurred on Saturday morning when a fire broke out in the Garib Rath Express (Train No. 12204) traveling from Amritsar to Saharsa, Bihar. The blaze started near Punjab’s Sirhind railway station, reportedly due to a short circuit in coach number 19 (AC bogie). Several traders from Ludhiana were also among the passengers on board.

Panic Among Passengers

As soon as smoke was noticed in coach number 19, a passenger immediately pulled the emergency chain, bringing the train to a halt. Passengers quickly began evacuating, leaving behind their luggage in panic. In the chaos, several passengers sustained minor injuries while jumping off the train. Some families were traveling with young children, adding to the panic at the scene.

Rescue Operations and Damage

Railway authorities, the fire brigade, and police teams reached the site promptly after receiving the alert. After nearly an hour of efforts, the fire was brought under control. However, coach number 19 was completely gutted, while coach number 18 also suffered partial damage.

Following the containment of the fire, the burnt coach was detached from the train, and the remaining portion was dispatched to Ambala, where replacement coaches were to be attached. According to the official statement from the Railways, no casualties were reported. The Ambala Division DRM also visited the site to inspect the situation.

The quick action by passengers and railway staff prevented a major disaster. While property damage was extensive, authorities confirmed that no lives were lost in the incident.
