Former Punjab CM Charanjit Singh Channi appears for MA exam at Panjab University

Congress MP focuses on academics amid political developments in Punjab; skips CWC meeting in Delhi due to examination

Amid continuing political developments and internal differences within the Punjab Congress, former Punjab Chief Minister and Congress MP Charanjit Singh Channi has turned his attention to academics.

Channi appeared for his MA in Public Administration examination at Panjab University on Thursday, sitting for the paper like any other student. Security personnel accompanying the former Chief Minister remained stationed outside the examination centre while he took the test.

The examination was scheduled to continue until 12:30 p.m., with Channi attending the paper inside the examination hall.

From politics to the examination hall

Channi's appearance at the university offered a striking contrast to his political life. The former Punjab Chief Minister is currently pursuing a master's degree in Public Administration, continuing a long-standing interest in higher education and research.

Despite being an active Congress MP, Channi has continued to pursue academics alongside his political responsibilities. His academic background includes higher studies in political science, law and management, while he also holds a PhD in Political Science from Panjab University.

A PhD on Congress and electoral politics

Channi's academic journey has previously focused closely on politics itself. His doctoral research examined the Indian National Congress, its central organisation and electoral strategies in Lok Sabha elections.

His research gave him an opportunity to examine the functioning and electoral strategies of the party from an academic perspective while having first-hand experience of its internal political dynamics.

Now, his decision to pursue Public Administration represents another academic focus, particularly relevant to governance, policymaking and the functioning of government.

Examination takes priority over CWC meeting

Channi's examination schedule also meant that he did not attend the Congress Working Committee meeting in Delhi.

While senior Congress leaders were engaged in organisational and political deliberations in the national capital, Channi was at Panjab University completing his examination.

His decision highlights how academics continues to remain an important part of his life even after years in active politics and public office.

Interest in public policy and reforms

Channi has also shown interest in further research, particularly in areas related to public policy and administrative reforms.

His current academic pursuit therefore comes against the backdrop of his own experience in government, where he served as Punjab Chief Minister and dealt with issues of administration, governance and policy implementation.

For the Congress MP, the university campus has become a parallel space to political life — one where, despite his stature as a former Chief Minister, he continues to sit for examinations like any other student.

At a time when political developments within the Punjab Congress remain closely watched, Channi's decision to focus on his studies provides a distinctly different picture of the former Chief Minister — one of a politician who continues to pursue education even while remaining active in public life.
