The First Information Report (FIR) registered by Division number 6 police of Jalandhar Commissionerate has laid out the precise sequence of events in the road accident that killed Richi Kaypee, 36, son of former MP and senior Akali leader Mohinder Singh Kaypee, late on September 13 at Model Town’s Mata Rani Chowk.
The FIR, recorded on Kaypee’s statement, notes that father and son were returning home after some personal work. Kaypee was driving his Marazzo (PB08-L-0001) while Richi drove ahead in a Toyota Fortuner (PB08-AT-0001). Around 10:45 pm, when they reached near the Bata showroom at Mata Rani Chowk, another vehicle, a Grand Vitara (PB08-FK-7073), suddenly came infront of his car. At that same moment, a Creta (PB08-DB-6500) arrived at very high speed and struck his car from behind,” the FIR quotes Kaypee.
“The impact was so severe that my son Richi Kaypee died on the spot. I immediately took him first to Global Hospital and then Patel Hospital, but doctors also declared him dead. My son lost his life due to rash driving by both the drivers. Legal action should be taken.”
The FIR further records that police received information about the accident late in the night and rushed to the scene. A police party led by ASI Sushil Kumar later reached Kaypee’s residence in Model Town to formally note his statement, which was verified and acted upon.
A case has since been registered against both the Creta driver, Gursharan Singh alias Prince, and the Vitara driver, Vishu Kapoor, under sections 281, 125(A), 125(B), 105 and 324(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) 2023, relating to rash or negligent driving, endangering life, causing death by rash act, and mischief causing damage.
Police have confirmed that both vehicles have been seized. While Gursharan Singh allegedly fled the spot, Kapoor’s family has alleged he was also injured in the crash and wrongly implicated. Investigators said CCTV footage from Mata Rani Chowk and adjoining areas is being scanned to reconstruct the sequence and fix responsibility.
Meanwhile, the accident has sent shockwaves across Jalandhar. Richi Kaypee, the only son of the former MP, had been working with his father in political activities. His cremation on Tuesday was attended by hundreds, with leaders across parties paying tribute. Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann described his death as “an irreparable loss,” while condolence messages poured in from political, social and community circles.
The FIR, however, remains central to the investigation — with Kaypee’s word-to-word account squarely blaming the reckless driving of both the Creta and Vitara drivers for the tragedy that cut short his son’s life.
