A herd of stray cattle on Thursday morning casually strolled on Amritsar's famous Heritage Street. Devotees and tourists go to Golden Temple by passing through heritage street of Amritsar.
Going by the video that has surfaced, a herd of cattle can be seen walking in the middle of the road while vehicles behind them try to go ahead. A man on a bike can be seen trying to dodge one of the cattle and he successfully goes forward. Also, an E-Rickshaw stopped while the herd of cattle came near to it.
Furthermore, the video showcased that one of the cattle from the heard approach toward a bench-like structure where a woman and a girl were sitting. Seeing the cattle approaching, both of them stood up and leave from there.
In the end, a traffic cop was seen trying to remove the heard of cattle with the help of a stick.
Notably, the video comes at a time when the issue of stray cattle on road is being discussed. The debate around stray animals on road has popped up after the death of Punjabi singer Rajvir Jawanda.
During the last rites of Rajvir Jawanda, Punjabi singer Resham Singh Anmol raised the issue of stray cattle on road.
Talking to the media, Anmol had questioned the government that if they pay various kinds of taxes like road tax, toll tax, then why cant the issue of stray animals be resolved?
"I want to apologise to Rajvir Jawanda because he became a victim of the shortcomings of our system. The accident happened because of stray animals. The government collects all kinds of taxes- toll tax, road tax, and more, we are paying everything. But can’t the government at least take action against the responsible officers?'
"Someone must be held accountable. This case has come to light because he was famous, but tomorrow, it could happen to you, me, or anyone else. Stray animals are a major issue, and you (the media) can play a big role in highlighting this problem."
According to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) 2023 report, Ludhiana recorded 504 road accidents, resulting in 402 deaths, an alarming 80% fatality rate.
As per reports, stray animals emerged as the third biggest cause of road deaths in Ludhiana, killing 21 people in 20 accidents in 2023.
