Government employees, students and staff of government institutions in Punjab may be looking forward to a long weekend, but the holiday status for Friday, October 16, 2026, needs to be noted carefully. The day marks the Jayanti of Baba Banda Singh Bahadur and is listed as a restricted holiday in the Punjab Government's holiday calendar.
The distinction between a restricted holiday and a gazetted holiday is important, as a restricted holiday does not automatically mean that all government offices and educational institutions across the state will remain closed.
A restricted holiday is different from a gazetted holiday. While gazetted holidays generally apply to government offices as specified in the official holiday calendar, restricted holidays allow eligible employees to avail leave for selected occasions, subject to applicable rules and departmental instructions.
Therefore, employees should check their department’s holiday list and leave policy before assuming that government offices or other institutions will remain closed on October 16.
October 16 falls on a Friday, followed by Saturday, October 17, and Sunday, October 18. This could create a three-day break for people who are entitled to the restricted holiday or otherwise have Friday off.
However, it should not be treated as a statewide long weekend, as the restricted-holiday status does not mean that all government offices, schools, colleges and private establishments will automatically close.
