Is Punjab likely to witness a 'Wet New Year' on Dec 31 and Jan 1?

Weather models show mostly cloudy skies over many parts of Punjab around December 31 and January 1.

As the countdown to the New Year begins, all eyes are on the sky in Punjab. Updated forecasts now point to mostly cloudy conditions over many parts of the state on December 31 and January 1, raising the question: will the New Year begin on a damp note?

As per the Apple weather forecast, the current forecast indicate  mostly cloudy sky rather than sunlight. Also there can be cloudy conditions in many parts of Punjab with some drizzle and a chilling sensation of winter.

The day temperatures will continue to remain at 20-22 degrees, and there could also be a chance of dropping to 6-8 degrees at evening time for places like Jalandhar and Amritsar.

Additionally, there could be fog and wind, which could further lower the temperature in the early morning.

Clouds, Cool and light rain

There are reports of mostly cloudy conditions in different areas on December 31 and January 1 through weather maps. There are also chances of light rain in isolated areas. - There are reports from the India Meteorological Department of a weak western disturbance that will move away on December 31.

Will New Year’s Eve be “wet”?

- Based on the data available right now, any rain that shows up is likely to be light and broken. There is no clear sign yet of a strong system that would soak the entire state in one go.

- In simple terms, some places may wake up to damp roads, mist and a bit of drizzle on New Year’s Eve or New Year’s Day, while others might only get heavy cloud, fog and chilly winds without actual rainfall.

Impact on New Year plans

- Those planning rooftop parties, open-air shows or DJ nights might need a Plan B. Cool winds, fog and a sudden light shower can easily disturb sound equipment and seating, so basic plastic sheets, tents, umbrellas and extra warm clothes should be kept ready rather than arranged at the last minute.

- For farmers, a little rain at this stage can actually be helpful. Even a short spell can freshen up rabi crops and add some moisture to the soil. Still, they will have to keep an eye on advisories from the weather office and agriculture department in case the system becomes stronger around December 30–31.
