The state of Punjab will observe a public and bank holiday on Wednesday, November 5, 2025, to celebrate Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s Gurpurab, the birth anniversary of the first Sikh Guru and the founder of Sikhism.
According to the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) holiday list, banks across Punjab will remain closed on November 5. The Punjab government has also notified the day as an official public holiday, meaning that all government offices, schools, and educational institutions will remain shut. Many private businesses and shops will also remain closed or operate for limited hours as devotees take part in religious events.
Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s Gurpurab is one of the most revered occasions in Punjab, symbolizing the message of peace, equality, and devotion. Gurdwaras across the state especially Sri Harmandir Sahib (Golden Temple) in Amritsar are decorated with lights and flowers. Thousands of devotees are expected to participate in ‘Nagar Kirtan’ processions, ‘Akhand Path’ recitations, and ‘Langar Seva’ (community kitchen) organized at every Gurdwara.
Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s teachings like Naam Japna (meditation), Kirat Karni (honest living), and Vand k Chakna (sharing with others) continue to guide millions worldwide. For the people of Punjab, this day is more than just a holiday; it’s a day of reflection, service, and devotion.
With both the RBI and the Punjab government confirming November 5 as a holiday, banks and public offices will reopen on the following working day. Citizens are advised to plan their financial and official work accordingly.
