A 26-year-old man was found dead at a vacant plot in New Rattan Nagar, Jalandhar, triggering panic among local residents. The deceased has been identified as Sandeep Kumar, who was reportedly unmarried.
Residents informed the Basti Bawa Khel police after spotting the body and raised suspicions that he may have been murdered.
According to locals, Sandeep’s body was found lying in the plot with visible injury marks on his body, including an injury on his forehead.
Residents claimed that Sandeep had allegedly been involved in an argument with someone before his death, raising concerns that the incident could be linked to a previous dispute.
However, police have not confirmed murder at this stage.
After receiving information through the 112 emergency helpline, police reached the spot and took the body into custody.
The deceased’s body has been shifted to the Civil Hospital mortuary for a post-mortem examination. Police said the exact cause of death will become clearer after the post-mortem report.
The plot where the body was discovered reportedly belongs to a landowner.
During the preliminary investigation, police questioned people living in the surrounding area. According to the information gathered so far, Sandeep had returned home around three days ago after being discharged from a hospital.
Locals also claimed that he was habitual of consuming alcohol. Police are examining his recent movements and circumstances leading up to his death.
The Station House Officer said police are investigating information regarding an earlier dispute involving the deceased.
At the same time, the officer cautioned against drawing conclusions about murder before the medical examination is completed.
Regarding the injury on Sandeep’s forehead, the police said it was possible that the injury may have occurred after he fell onto a stone, though this will be established only through the investigation and post-mortem findings.
Police officials have also spoken to Sandeep’s mother and said further action will be taken based on the statements of the family members and other evidence gathered during the investigation.
The authorities are currently examining whether the death was the result of an assault, an accidental fall or another cause.
The post-mortem report is expected to play a crucial role in determining the exact cause of Sandeep Kumar’s death and whether a murder case is warranted.
