Jalandhar dc issues precautionary advisory after release of 1.14 lakh cusec water from Ropar

DC urges residents along river catchments to stay alert, avoid riverbanks; over 54 relief camps ready in district

The Jalandhar Administration has issued an precautionary advisory following the release of 1.14 lakh cusec water from the Ropar on Monday evening. The released water is expected to reach Jalandhar by Tuesday early morning, prompting the district authorities to issue an advisory for residents living along river catchments and vulnerable points.

Deputy Commissioner Dr. Himanshu Aggarwal appealed to people in low-lying and flood-prone areas to avoid going near the river banks besides shifting to higher placed relief camps, when asked by authorities to avert any flood like situation. He further mentioned that coupled with other drain water, nearly 1.25 to1.50 lakh cusec of water may pass through Jalandhar. He said the Punjab Government had already made elaborate arrangements to prevent any flood-like situation and assured that sufficient relief camps, food supplies, fodder, and medicines were in place. Over 54 relief centres have been set up across the district to facilitate people living in flood prone areas. He also appealed to people to Cooperate with authorities in rescue and evacuation measures, if appealed upon by local authorities.

Dr. Aggarwal also urged people to avoid venturing near riverbanks, which could turn dangerous after a sudden rise in water levels. He informed that administrative teams have been deployed in vulnerable villages, and public announcements are being made through religious places to sensitize the masses.

Highlighting the need for collective vigilance, the Deputy Commissioner emphasized that every effort was being made to ensure smooth passage of water through the district. He added that a state-level flood control room has been set up in Jalandhar, where people can report emergencies or seek assistance by calling 0181-2240064.

“The situation demands alertness, but with timely action and public cooperation, we can overcome this challenge,” Dr. Aggarwal said. He also called upon masses not to panic over this situation; however emphasized proper awareness and alertness to prevent any kind of untoward situation.
