Police dismiss social media claim involving ‘migrant group’
Jalandhar Police have refuted a video circulating on social media that claimed a Punjabi man, allegedly close to a councillor, was murdered by a group of migrant persons.
ACP Central Jalandhar Rajesh Thakur, PPS, said the claim being circulated online was not based on facts and clarified the circumstances surrounding the murder reported in the city.
Argument between two friends turned fatal
According to police, the incident took place on September 30 in Mohalla Guru Nanakpura, where Davinder Singh and his friend Varinder alias Roopi were sitting together and consuming alcohol.
Police said an argument broke out between the two over an unspecified issue. During the altercation, Varinder allegedly attacked Davinder Singh with a knife, resulting in his death.
The police account, therefore, differs from the version being circulated on social media, which attributed the killing to a group of migrant persons.
Accused arrested within a day
Following the incident, FIR No. 280 dated September 30 was registered at Police Station Rama Mandi under Section 103 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Police said they acted promptly and arrested Varinder alias Roopi on October 1, a day after the incident.
ACP Rajesh Thakur urged people to rely on verified information and not circulate unverified claims on social media, particularly when they could create confusion around a criminal investigation.
The investigation into the case is underway.
