Jalandhar Police Arrest All Four Accused in Babu Jagjivan Chowk Attack

Police say the accused allegedly assaulted the couple and later attempted to intimidate them into withdrawing their complaint.

The Jalandhar Police have arrested four accused in connection with the assault on a young man and his wife at Babu Jagjivan Chowk (Bhaiya Mandi Chowk), an incident that sparked public outrage after the victim's family alleged a delayed police response and repeated attacks by the accused.the complaint was filed on 27-06-2026 and the investigation took place after that.

Information by the police

According to the police, the incident occurred when a woman was accompanying her husband to a de-addiction centre to collect his prescribed medication. While passing through the busy chowk, the couple was allegedly attacked by a group of men following a personal dispute. The family claimed that the attackers assaulted the victim with the heavy lid of a roadside manhole chamber, causing injuries and creating panic in the area.  Providing details of the investigation, police officer Yadwinder Rana said that action was initiated immediately after the family lodged a formal complaint. Based on the information, the police got a tip off that the accused were present at the Valmik Chownk of Jalandhar. Acting on the information, the police reached the spot and arrested the accused.

Details of the accused

Police identified the accused as Neeraj Nepali, Lucky Thapar alias Deevu, Kali, and Amit Kumar alias Chhanga. All of the accused have been arrested by the police Officials said cases have already been registered against the arrested accused, and preliminary investigation has revealed that they have previous criminal records. They have a NDPC FIR against them no. 146 under IPC.

Second attack at the victim

According to the police, the matter escalated further when the accused allegedly attempted to attack the victim's family for a second time later the same day. Investigators said the second attack was allegedly aimed at pressuring the family to withdraw the police complaint. The timely intervention of the police prevented the situation from worsening.

Details after investigation

During the investigation, police also discovered that both parties are related, with the accused and the complainant connected through a family relationship as brothers-in-law (saala-jeeja). Officials believe that an existing personal dispute may have contributed to the violent confrontation, although all aspects of the case are still being examined

Allegations on the accused

The victim's wife made serious allegations against the accused, claiming that Kali, Chhanga, Neeraj Nepali, and Deevu were involved in drug-related activities. She alleged that her brother had gone to collect medicine when the accused attacked him without provocation. When she intervened to protect him, she claimed that two of the accused allegedly tore her clothes and threatened to shoot the family in public.

However, police have clarified that no evidence has so far emerged linking the incident to drug trafficking, and the investigation is currently focused on the assault and criminal intimidation charges. The Jalandhar Police said raids are being conducted to arrest the remaining accused. Officials assured that strict legal action will be taken against everyone involved and appealed to the public not to spread rumours while the investigation remains underway.
