In an attempt to keep the city clean, Jalandhar Municipal Corporation (MC) will start issuing fines on people who are caught throwing waste in the public. From normal households to commercial shops, all will be fined by Jalandhar Municipal Corporation if they are caught littering in the open or public places.
Jalandhar Mayor Vaneet Dhir confirmed to True Scoop that the corporation has come up with this step as throwing waste in public places is not good.
Jalandhar MC will impose a fine of Rs 1,000 if people are caughting throwing garbage for the first time and Rs 2,000 if they are caught dumping it for the second time.
Similarly, large commercial establishments will be fined Rs 10,000 for not processing their waste, and Rs 20,000 for the second time. The corporation has also developed a fine collection plan for this purpose. Inspectors and supervisors in the North, West, Central, and Cantt areas will be equipped with POS machines.
Upon imposing the fine, a receipt will be issued for the amount collected. Those who fail to pay the fine will be charged with property tax. The fine will then be paid along with the property tax.
The corporation has prepared the Solid Waste Management Bylaws 2023 to improve the sanitation system. The corporation has received approval from Chandigarh.
