A sarpanch from Jalandhar’s Kahanpur village has been booked after a woman accused him of rape, allegedly after she was made to consume a drug-laced cold drink. The woman also alleged that the accused recorded a video of the incident and later used it to threaten and blackmail her.
Following the woman’s complaint and a legal opinion, Maksudan police registered an FIR against Kahanpur sarpanch Kamaljit Singh under Section 64 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Woman Alleges She Was Drugged at Dairy
According to the complaint, the alleged incident took place in June 2024. The woman told police that her child was crying because of hunger, following which she went to Kamaljit Singh’s dairy in the village to buy milk.
She alleged that Singh asked her to sit inside a room at the dairy and later offered her a cold drink. According to her statement, she became unconscious after consuming it.
The woman alleged that the accused took advantage of her unconscious state and sexually assaulted her.
Alleged Video Used for Blackmail
The complainant further alleged that after she regained consciousness, Kamaljit Singh showed her an objectionable video recorded on his mobile phone.
She claimed that he threatened to make the video public if she disclosed the incident to anyone. She also alleged that threats were made against her children, including a threat to have them kidnapped and killed.
According to the complaint, the alleged blackmail continued and she was repeatedly called and forced into sexual relations against her wishes.
Woman Says She Remained Silent Due to Fear
The woman, who has two children, reportedly told police that she initially kept the matter to herself because she feared social humiliation and the consequences of the alleged threats.
She later informed her husband about what had happened and approached the police with her complaint.
Sarpanch Denies All Allegations
Kamaljit Singh has denied the allegations and described the complaint as baseless.
As recorded in the FIR-related statements, Singh told investigators that the woman had never visited him and that he did not even have a dairy at the location where she alleged the sexual assault took place.
During the police inquiry, his statement was recorded, along with statements from people who supported his version of events.
Police Sought Legal Opinion
The complaint relates to an alleged incident from June 2024. During the investigation process, police sought a legal opinion from the District Attorney (Legal).
The legal opinion reportedly referred to the Supreme Court’s landmark Lalita Kumari v. Government of Uttar Pradesh judgment and advised registration of an FIR.
The case has now been formally registered, while the allegations made by the woman and the defence presented by the accused remain subject to police investigation and due legal process.
