Giving a major boost to Jalandhar’s sporting profile, the Asian Hockey Championship 2026 is set to be hosted in Jalandhar and Mohali later this year and the announcement for the same was made by Hockey Punjab president and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Jalandhar Central halka incharge Nitin Kohli.
As per reports, the tournament will be held between October and November this year and will feature the top six teams from the Asian Games, bringing international-level hockey action to Punjab. The opening and closing ceremonies for the championship will take place in Mohali, while the rest of the matches will be played in Jalandhar at the Burlton Park Sports Complex.
Reportedly, preparation is already underway at the venue to meet international standards, Kohli taking about the same informed that the practice ground at Burlton Park is nearly complete, and funds worth ₹4–5 crore have been approved to upgrade stadium lighting and address some other issues.
Hosting the tournament will give Jalandhar national and international recognition, while also boosting local sports culture, tourism and business opportunities. The event is being seen as a significant step towards establishing Jalandhar as a key center for international hockey in India.
