The growing menace of stray dogs in Jalandhar has once again come under the spotlight after a mother and her young son were injured in a shocking attack in the city's New Kamal Vihar area. The incident has raised fresh concerns over public safety, with local residents alleging that repeated complaints about stray dogs have failed to prompt effective action.

According to information, Akal Deep Kaur, a resident of GTB Nagar, had gone to pick up her nursery-going son, Jaskirat, from Innocent Hearts School after classes. While the two were returning home on a scooter, they were allegedly surrounded by a pack of stray dogs in New Kamal Vihar.
Statements by the eyewitnesses
Eyewitnesses and locals said the dogs suddenly chased and attacked the scooter, causing Akal Deep Kaur to lose control of the vehicle. The scooter skidded and both mother and son fell onto the road. They sustained multiple injuries in the fall and were rushed to a nearby hospital in a bleeding condition.
What doctors had to say
Doctors attending to the child said Jaskirat suffered a serious head injury and is currently undergoing treatment. The condition of the mother has not been reported as critical, but she also sustained injuries in the accident.
Claims by residents
Residents of the locality claimed that the colony has been grappling with the problem of stray dogs for a long time. According to them, more than 30 stray dogs roam the area and frequently chase or attack pedestrians, cyclists and two-wheeler riders. They alleged that despite repeated complaints to the authorities, no permanent solution has been implemented, leaving residents fearful of stepping out, especially with children.
Seriousness of the issue
The rising number of dog-bite cases in Jalandhar reflects the seriousness of the issue. According to available data, the Anti-Rabies Vaccine (ARV) Outpatient Department at the Civil Hospital treats nearly 140 patients every day, of whom around 25 to 30 are fresh dog-bite victims. Anti-rabies vaccines are also being administered daily at Aam Aadmi Clinics across the city to meet the growing demand.
Stray dog management infrastructure
Meanwhile, Senior Deputy Mayor Balbir Singh Bittu acknowledged delays in strengthening the city's stray dog management infrastructure. He said the construction of a new kennel at the municipal dog pound has been progressing at a slow pace. The contractor had earlier been served two show-cause notices over the delay, but as there was no significant improvement in the pace of work, the Municipal Corporation has now issued a notice to blacklist the contractor.
The latest incident has once again highlighted the urgent need for effective stray dog management, faster completion of animal shelter infrastructure and stronger measures to ensure the safety of residents across Jalandhar.
