Jalandhar: The Election Commission of India’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise will enter its door-to-door verification phase in Jalandhar from June 25, with Booth Level Officers (BLOs) set to visit households across the district till July 24 for voter verification and updation.
During a press conference in Jalandhar, Deputy Commissioner Jalandhar Varjeet Walia, said the exercise is aimed at verifying voter records, correcting discrepancies and updating the electoral rolls ahead of the final publication scheduled for October 1, 2026.
Officials said nearly 82% voter mapping has already been completed during the pre-SIR phase, while around 18% voters are still categorised as “unmapped.” Apart from this, nearly 2.87 lakh voter entries in the district have been flagged by the software system under different anomaly or logical discrepancy categories.
These discrepancies include issues such as very small age gaps between parents and children, spelling mismatches in names, duplicate-type entries and other inconsistencies in voter data. BLOs will visit such households to physically verify records and collect supporting documents wherever corrections are required.
As part of the process, BLOs will carry pre-printed enumeration forms containing the voter’s name, address, photograph and a QR code. Voters will need to fill in the remaining details, including Aadhaar information, mobile number and family relation details. Officials clarified that the form can be signed either by the voter or by any adult family member on the voter’s behalf.
Election officials said BLOs will make at least three visits to every household during the survey period. If houses remain locked, forms may be slipped under doors wherever possible, while officials may also contact residents over phone calls.
The Election Commission has approved 13 supporting documents for verification purposes. These include Aadhaar card, passport, birth certificate, matriculation certificate, pension payment orders, permanent residence certificate, caste certificate, family register and extracts from the 2003 voter list.
Officials further clarified that only voters who submit their enumeration forms will be included in the draft electoral rolls to be published on August 3. Voters falling under ASD categories Absent, Shifted, Dead and Duplicate or those who fail to resolve discrepancies may receive notices from election authorities.
The claims and objections process will remain open from August 3 to September 2, while disposal of claims and objections will continue till September 28. The final electoral rolls will be published on October 1, 2026.
To manage the large-scale exercise, five additional Assistant Electoral Registration Officers (AEROs) have been appointed in every Assembly constituency. Political parties have also been allowed to appoint Booth Level Agents (BLAs) to assist voters and coordinate with BLOs during the revision process.
During the interaction, officials also clarified that Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) can participate in the process through adult family members or authorised Booth Level Agents and their physical presence at home will not be mandatory.
For voter assistance and grievance redressal, the Election Commission’s toll-free helpline number 1950 will remain operational daily from 8 AM to 8 PM.
