Jalandhar worker electrocuted during roof construction; contractor, locals trade blame

Labourer dies after coming in contact with high-voltage power lines in New Ratan Nagar; contractor alleges homeowner ignored safety warning

A shocking incident from Jalandhar has come into light. One of the labour working on construction of a roof slab of a house got electrocuted and died at the spot. The incident took place on 27 June 2026, Saturday at andhar's New Ratan Nagar locality. The deceased is identified as Mandon, a resident of Basti Bawa Khel. He was married and had 2 children

Cause of the mishap

The incident took place when Mandon was doing the construction work at the residence. According to the information available, Mandon had reached the construction site along with his contractor to carry out the roof slab work. After setting up the machinery required for the construction process, he attempted to move high-voltage electricity wires that were passing directly above the building. During the process, he accidentally came into contact with the live wires and suffered a severe electric shock. The high voltage shock was so intense that it left him with burnt injury marks. To save his life remaining members of the labour and the contractor rushed him to the hospital. Despite the immense efforts of the doctor, Mandon was declared dead.

Interaction with the contractor

In the interaction with he contractor of the project, Ramesh Kumar, he alleged that the home owner was clearly informed about the risk while working with the scattered live wire. He added to the statement that the homeowner assured them that necessary arrangement will be made in order to avoid the risks. However, when no such arrangements were made by the following morning, the labourers were left with no option but to begin work. Ramesh Kumar alleged that while trying to move the wires with the help of a rope, Mandon came in contact with the live line, leading to the fatal accident.

Was it all the contractor’s fault?

During interaction with the locals and collecting information about the case, a local resident identified as Vikas, who was present at the scene, questioned the contractor's decision to proceed with the work despite the obvious danger. He argued that if high-voltage wires were passing directly above the roof, the contractor should have suspended the construction work until the area was made safe. Vikas further alleged that the contractor was not present at the site during the operation and had left the labourers unattended, exposing them to unnecessary risk. This caused an argument between the labourers and Vikas

Argument between the labour and Vikas

“If high-voltage wires were passing directly above the roof, the contractor should have suspended the construction work until the area was made safe”. This statement by Vikas led to an argument between the labour and Vikas. Labour and the contractor unitedly opposed Vikas and made a point that the home owner would not have assigned the work if he knew that live wires are all over the roof. They also added that the home owner assured of making necessary arrangements by the next morning to proceed the work. When nothing was done, the labour had no choice but to work on the construction project.

The tragic accident has sparked allegations of negligence, with both the contractor and local residents blaming each other for failing to ensure proper safety measures at the site.
