Jalandhar is preparing to take a significant step towards becoming a smarter and more efficient city with the introduction of an Adaptive Traffic Control System (ATCS) at its busiest intersections. The project, beginning with the congested Shri Ram Chowk, aims to replace conventional traffic signals with intelligent technology that automatically adjusts signal timings based on real-time traffic flow. How is this system diff from traditional lights
Unlike traditional traffic lights that operate on fixed timers, the adaptive system uses cameras and sensors to monitor traffic from all directions. The technology analyses vehicle density and accordingly increases or decreases the duration of green signals. For example, if one road experiences heavy traffic while another remains relatively empty, the system will allocate more green time to the busier route instead of following a predetermined cycle. Estimated project cost
According to the report, the Municipal Corporation plans to extend this smart traffic management system to 42 major intersections across the city under a project estimated to cost around ₹12 crore. Shri Ram Chowk has been chosen as the first location due to its heavy traffic generated by schools, banks, government offices, hospitals and commercial establishments. The authorities aim to complete the initial installation within the next few months before expanding it citywide.
