Moga Police have arrested a young woman from Ferozepur district for allegedly posing as an Assistant Sub-Inspector of the Punjab Police for more than two months.
The accused has been identified as Komalpreet Kaur, a resident of Mallewala village near Chandewala in Ferozepur district and according to police sources, she allegedly created a fake identity as a police officer and used the identity to gain social influence.
Police said Komalpreet allegedly wore a Punjab Police uniform and carried equipment that made her appear to be a serving police officer, she was also allegedly carrying two walkie-talkie sets and a forged departmental identity card and according to the information available, the alleged impersonation continued for over two months before police became suspicious of her identity.
The case came to light after police personnel noticed Komalpreet’s regular visits to the Sanjh Kendra located near the City-1 Police Station in Moga and according to police sources, she would visit the centre and leave her lunch tiffin with the staff on duty. She allegedly told them that she was posted on traffic duty at Main Chowk and would return later to collect her food.
After around an hour, she would reportedly return, pick up her tiffin and leave.
The routine continued for some time, however, police personnel eventually became suspicious because they could not find her name in the official duty records, and her claim of being posted on traffic duty did not match the information available with the police department. Officials reportedly checked duty rosters and posting details but did not find her name.
This led police personnel to question her about her alleged police posting.
When questioned, Komalpreet was reportedly asked about details that a genuine police officer would normally be able to provide, including her batch, posting information and the names of her supervisory officers and according to police sources, her responses failed to satisfy the officers. The discrepancy between her claims and official police records increased suspicion.
During the search, officers allegedly recovered a Punjab Police uniform, two radio handsets and a forged departmental identity card from her possession and the recovery of these items reportedly strengthened the suspicion that she had been using a fake police identity.
According to police sources, Komalpreet came from a modest background and allegedly wanted to improve her social status and police also said she allegedly used the identity of a police officer to create an image of herself as a government employee with a respectable position.
According to the information provided by police sources, Komalpreet allegedly used the fake police identity to help secure a marriage proposal into a well-off family, she reportedly married into an affluent household around a month ago and police are now investigating the circumstances surrounding the marriage and whether the alleged fake identity played a role in securing the marriage alliance, however, the exact details of what the family knew about her alleged identity and when they became aware of the matter have not been established.
Following the investigation, Moga Police registered a case against Komalpreet under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) relating to alleged impersonation, forgery and misuse of official emblems and the police investigation is still underway.
