The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather alert for Punjab till June 25, forecasting thunderstorms along with lightning and strong winds across several parts of the state. According to the weather forecast, the impact of the system is likely to be felt from June 23 onward, with weather activity expected to remain active over the next three days.
In the forecast by IMD, isolated to scattered rainfall in various districts of Punjab, along with thunderstorms and gusty winds reaching speeds of 40-50 kmph is predicted. In some areas, wind speeds may touch up to 60 kmph during intense thunderstorm. The weather department has advised people to remain cautious, especially during lightning and strong wind events.
Current weather conditions across Punjab remain hot and humid despite intermittent cloud cover. In major cities, temperatures continue to hover around the upper 30s. Jalandhar recorded a maximum temperature of around 37°C, Ludhiana remained close to 38°C, while Amritsar touched about 39°C. Although temperatures are slightly below normal for this time of year due to recent pre-monsoon activity, high humidity levels have continued to make conditions slightly uncomfortable.
The expected rainfall and thunderstorm is likely to bring much-needed relief from the heat. Weather experts believe that cloud cover and scattered showers could help reduce daytime temperatures across several districts and improve overall weather conditions.
Punjab has witnessed changing weather patterns over the past few weeks, with pre-monsoon showers affecting various districts such as Jalandhar, Amritsar, Ludhiana, Pathankot, Hoshiarpur and Mohali. These weather systems have already brought occasional rainfall and strong winds to parts of the state.
The IMD has advised residents to avoid standing under trees, in open fields or near electric poles during thunderstorms. Farmers have also been urged to monitor weather updates and plan agricultural activities accordingly.
With thunderstorms, lightning, rain and strong winds expected till June 25, residents across Punjab can look forward to a temporary break from the ongoing heat and humidity while remaining alert to changing weather conditions.
