The mother of 13-year-old girl, who was sexually assaulted and murdered in Jalandhar’s Basti Bawa Khel area, has accused two senior police officers of threatening her family, raising fresh questions about accountability in the city’s police force.
In a letter addressed to the Punjab Governor, Chief Minister, DGP and Commissioner of Police Jalandhar, victim's mother named DSP Gagandeep Singh and SHO Manjinder Singh as the officers who visited her home and intimidated her for seeking action against ASI Mangat Ram and his police team.
According to the letter, the two officers allegedly mocked her daughter and her family, used vulgar language, and warned that pressing for justice against the suspended ASI could bring danger to her family.
Victim's mother said that these threats have left her living in fear and seriously doubting whether justice will be served in her daughter’s case.
The letter also highlights that ASI Mangat Ram and the police team first on the spot committed “serious negligence” during the investigation of the case, for which only Mangat Ram has been suspended. No FIR has been filed against the remaining police personnel, raising questions about why others involved have not faced any accountability.
She has demanded strict action, including dismissal, against DSP Gagandeep Singh, SHO Manjinder Singh, and the entire police team involved in the negligence and threats. She has also sought protection for her family, fearing that the investigation into her daughter’s rape and murder could be compromised by the very officers she fears.
The case has sparked anger and concern over policing standards in Jalandhar, highlighting serious gaps in accountability when officers themselves are accused of misconduct.
