Concerns over the safety of milk and dairy products have come into focus after Jalandhar MP and former Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi shared a video highlighting the issue of alleged adulteration.
In the video Channi claimed that a large portion of milk and paneer in the market could be fake or mixed with harmful substances and also demonstrated how a milk-like liquid can be prepared by mixing urea and water which can look similar to real milk even after boiling.
He alleged that in some cases chemicals such as detergents are added to create the appearance of thickness and foam found in natural milk and warned that consuming such adulterated products may pose serious health risks.
Channi also pointed to the impact on dairy farmers saying that those producing pure milk are struggling to get fair prices and added that the easy availability of large quantities of milk at unusual times raises questions about its authenticity.
He has called for stricter laws and stronger action against those involved in such practices and said he is preparing a report and has suggested setting up testing facilities at dairy outlets so that consumers can check the quality of milk easily.
