Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh Resigns as Amritsar North MLA, Says ‘Punjab First’

Amritsar North MLA Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh resigns, emphasizes 'Punjab First' vision

In a significant political development in Punjab, Amritsar North MLA Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh has resigned from his membership of the Punjab Legislative Assembly. He has sent his resignation letter, dated November 1, 2026, to the Speaker of the Punjab Vidhan Sabha, seeking to make his resignation effective from the same date.

Announcing his decision, Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh expressed gratitude to the people of Amritsar for the love, respect and support they had extended to him. He said he would remain indebted to them throughout his life.

In his message, he called upon people to unite for the transformation of Punjab, saying the state must move beyond the politics of lanes and ribbon-cutting. He highlighted drugs, extortion, gangsterism and corruption as major challenges facing Punjab and called for collective efforts to restore the state's progressive identity.

Explaining his tenure as a legislator, Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh claimed that he had achieved nearly 90 per cent of the targets expected of an MLA. He said the responsibilities of councillors, mayors and MPs were separate from those assigned to an MLA. He also referred to the area-wise details of development works carried out by him, which, he said, were available in newspapers and on his Facebook page.

Describing his biggest achievement, he said he had ended the traditional 'mai-baap' culture in politics and worked by treating the public as his source of inspiration.

He further stated that he consistently raised issues concerning Amritsar in the Punjab Assembly, including drinking water, sewage, Circuit House, Company Bagh, dirty drains, Guru Nanak Dev University, Government Medical College, Saroop Rani College and the Bargari sacrilege case.

He claimed that he had raised locality-specific issues in the Assembly by explicitly mentioning streets and neighbourhoods, bringing grassroots concerns to the legislative platform.

Speaking about his future approach, Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh said he would work collectively with the people to formulate a strategy focused on clean politics and transparent administration. Reiterating his stand, he declared that his sole objective would remain "Punjab First" and that he would have no personal interests beyond this mission.

The resignation comes a day after another political development in Punjab, when two sitting Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLAs, Harmeet Singh Pathanmajra and Chetan Singh Jauramajra, also resigned from their Assembly membership, adding to the political activity in the state.
