Punjab government employees are set to get a three-day long weekend this week, with government offices scheduled to remain closed on Friday, September 4, on the occasion of Janmashtami and according to the Punjab Government’s official holiday calendar for 2026, September 4 has been notified as a public holiday for Janmashtami.
The festival marks the birth of Lord Krishna and is observed with religious ceremonies and celebrations.
Since the holiday falls on a Friday, it will be followed by the regular weekend.
For government employees whose normal weekly schedule includes Saturday and Sunday as holidays, this will result in three consecutive days off.
The three-day break will cover September 4, 5 and 6.
After the Janmashtami holiday on Friday and the regular Saturday-Sunday break, government offices will resume work on their next scheduled working day, however, the three-day break applies to employees who normally have both Saturday and Sunday off.
Employees or departments following different weekly schedules may not have the same holiday arrangement, but for those with the standard five-day working week, the combination of the Friday Janmashtami holiday and the weekend effectively creates a three-day long weekend in Punjab.
