The situation at Lovely Professional University (LPU) has added to the uncertainty among students, with mobile data and Wi-Fi services reportedly disrupted in and around the campus after jammers were installed.
Students said phone calls are working, but mobile data has stopped, while Wi-Fi is also not functioning in some parts of the hostel. The reported connectivity disruption has made it difficult for students to access online services, make digital payments and arrange their travel back home.
Parents booking tickets as students leave campus
According to students, around 50% of the college has already headed back home, while the remaining students are expected to leave by tomorrow following the official 10-day suspension of classes.
Students said many parents became concerned after the situation on campus and called their children home for safety. With mobile internet reportedly unavailable, several students said their parents are booking tickets for them and making travel arrangements from outside the university.
The disruption has also made online ticket booking difficult for students who would normally use mobile applications to arrange their journey.
Google Pay and online services affected
Students said the lack of mobile data has affected routine digital services, including Google Pay and other internet-based applications.
With most students dependent on digital payments, the inability to access mobile internet has created additional problems while purchasing essentials, arranging transport and managing other day-to-day requirements.
Students also said the connectivity restrictions have affected technical work that requires internet access.
Hostel Wi-Fi not working everywhere
The connectivity issue is reportedly not uniform across the campus. Students said Wi-Fi has stopped working in some hostel areas, while it continues to function in certain other locations.
The inconsistent connectivity has further added to the confusion as students prepare to leave the university.
MST exams cancelled, students prepare to leave
LPU has announced a 10-day suspension of classes following the escalation of protests on the campus. The MST examinations have also been cancelled.
With classes suspended and examinations cancelled, students are now returning to their hometowns. Those still on campus are expected to leave by tomorrow, according to students.
As parents arrange tickets and students make their way home, the reported disruption of mobile data and Wi-Fi has become another challenge during an already tense situation at the university.
