DIG Jalandhar Range Naveen Singla said the investigation into the incident at Lovely Professional University (LPU) is underway and that police will follow the legal course in the case.
Singla made the remarks after a meeting involving police officials, LPU management and student representatives. Jalandhar Commissioner of Police Satinder Singh and other officials were present at the meeting, while the university was represented by Vice Chancellor and Pro Chancellor, along with Registrar. Seven student representatives also attended.
According to Singla, the meeting was held in a positive environment and focused on concerns raised by students. These included issues related to hostel facilities, logistics and coordination between the university and students. He said there were instances where information did not reach students properly.
Singla said regular meetings would be held to address these concerns and work on the demands raised by students. He added that the university's logistical issues and other demands should be addressed soon.
On the case itself, the DIG said police are investigating the FIR registered in connection with the incident. He said a five-member committee would work on the investigation and that students would be updated about its progress.
When asked about the number of people being investigated, arrests, recoveries or whether those being investigated were connected to the university or were outsiders, Singla did not give details. He said the investigation was ongoing and it would be inappropriate to comment on these aspects at this stage.
The DIG was also questioned about claims and reports surrounding the incident. He reiterated that the FIR had been registered and that the police investigation was in progress.
On allegations of a lathi charge on protesting students, Singla said the police had exercised restraint and did not do lathi-charge. He said multiple rounds of negotiations were held with the students during the protests.
Singla also appealed to students not to take the law into their own hands and said all further action would be taken according to the law.
