A woman in Ludhiana has accused her husband and in-laws of deceiving her before marriage, forcing her to convert to Christianity and subjecting her to physical and mental harassment over dowry. An FIR has been registered against her in-laws following a complaint by her father, Vipan Kumar Verma.
According to the complaint, the woman, Kritika Verma, married Karanveer on September 2, 2026, at Shani Shiv Mandir in Sant Vihar, Ludhiana, following Hindu rituals. Her father alleged that Karanveer had introduced himself to Kritika as Karanveer Singh Sidhu and claimed to be a Jat Sikh.
The two reportedly met through their shared interest in biking. Kritika worked at an Apple Store, which Karanveer allegedly began visiting frequently before expressing his feelings for her. Their relationship eventually led to marriage after Kritika introduced him to her family and both sides made arrangements for the alliance, however, according to her father's account, Karanveer's family did not attend the wedding. His elder brother was present, while the groom participated in the ceremony.
The complaint states that after the wedding, Kritika stayed at her parental home for a few days before being sent to her matrimonial home. When she arrived there on October 5, her father-in-law allegedly refused to accept the marriage and told her that she would have to convert to Christianity before the family would recognise the relationship.
Her father alleged that the house had a large hall on the ground floor designed like a church. Kritika reportedly resisted the demand to change her religion initially but eventually agreed because she feared that her marriage would fall apart.
According to the allegations, her father-in-law took her to a swimming pool on the terrace and forced her to enter the water as part of the conversion process. The complaint further alleges that the incident was recorded on video and that derogatory remarks were made about Hindu deities.
These allegations form part of the complaint and have not been independently established.
The complaint further alleges that Kritika was initially sent back to her parents' home after the conversion, with her in-laws promising that a wedding would be conducted according to their religious customs. Karanveer later took her back, and the couple began living together.
Kritika allegedly discovered another detail about her husband when she entered the bedroom and noticed a tattoo bearing the name 'Nannu' on his chest. According to her family, the tattoo also carried the date October 16, 2021, which they claim was connected to his relationship with another woman.
The complaint states that Karanveer later told Kritika that he did not love her.
Kritika's father has alleged that disputes between the couple and her in-laws increased over time. According to him, the family demanded ₹10 lakh along with other dowry items. When the money was not provided, Kritika was allegedly thrown out of her matrimonial home.
She subsequently rented accommodation in Joginder Nagar, Haibowal, where her husband would occasionally visit. During these visits, he allegedly assaulted her.
Her father has also claimed that when he went to take his daughter home, members of her matrimonial family assaulted him. The family has alleged that Kritika faced both physical and mental harassment during the marriage.
The complaint also raises an allegation that the religious conversion was part of a plan to obtain a large sum of money from a Christian missionary organisation. This claim has not been independently verified.
Following the complaint filed by Vipan Kumar Verma, police registered an FIR against the in-laws. Further details about the investigation, the specific charges invoked and the response of the accused were not available in the information provided.
The allegations are part of the complainant's account. Their veracity and the responsibility of each accused will be determined through the investigation and legal proceedings.
