Mann Government expands ‘Aam Aadmi Clinics’ to prisons; free medicines and tests for inmates

The move aims to reduce overcrowding-related health risks and control the spread of diseases such as Hepatitis C, HIV, and Tuberculosis among inmates

Punjab’s Aam Aadmi Clinics (AACs), already transforming the state’s healthcare system, are set to reach the high walls of prisons under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann. With over 4.20 crore patients treated and more than 73,000 people receiving free healthcare daily, the Mann Government continues to demonstrate its commitment to public welfare.

In a landmark decision, the government will establish AACs in all 10 central jails across Punjab. This initiative reflects the government’s “Sevak” philosophy — ensuring that every citizen, whether free or incarcerated, has access to free and quality healthcare.

The move aims to reduce overcrowding-related health risks and control the spread of diseases such as Hepatitis C, HIV, and Tuberculosis among inmates. While 24x7 medical officers are already deployed in prisons, these clinics will provide specialized services and strengthen the existing healthcare infrastructure.

The Health Department is identifying suitable spaces within prisons for these clinics. Inmates will have access to 107 types of free medicines and 47 types of free diagnostic tests, marking a significant improvement in prison healthcare standards and providing timely preventive and curative care.

Currently, Punjab has 881 operational Aam Aadmi Clinics, and tenders for 236 new clinics have been issued. With this expansion, the total number of AACs in the state will rise to 1,117 clinics, reflecting the growing public trust in these centers.

Previously, rural and underprivileged populations had to travel long distances even for minor ailments; now, free, high-quality healthcare is available in their neighborhoods.

This initiative has relieved lakhs of families from the financial burden of medical expenses. Under Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, the government has made clear that “Good Health” is a top priority. Extending the program to prisons highlights a commitment to even the most marginalized and invisible segments of society.

By providing inmates with dignity and healthcare access, the Mann Government has redefined inclusive governance. Through initiatives like this, Punjab is emerging as a national leader in public health reform, setting a benchmark for compassionate, efficient, and accessible healthcare for all.
