Orange & yellow alerts issued in Punjab and HP: IMD’s weather alerts raise fresh concerns

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), Chandigarh, issued orange and yellow alerts for several districts of Punjab. The department has mentioned that heavy rainfall will be accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds - leading to severe weather conditions.

As per the update, the weather condition across Punjab is expected to remain rainy on July 23, 2025 (Wednesday).

July 22, 2025

Tuesday

The majority of the state will witness very heavy rainfall. The districts that witnessed extremely heavy rainfall include Pathankot, Hoshiarpur, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Nawanshahar, Ludhiana, Rupanagar, SAS Nagar (Mohali), Moga, Fatehgarh Sahib, Patiala, Sangrur, and Barnala.

It is to be noted that the downpour in Ludhiana was extreme, as the city roads were filled with water, and around half of the region got submerged under the water due to unstoppable rainfall.

Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Ferozepur, Faridkot, Bhatinda, and Mansa witnessed heavy rainfall along with thunderstorms and lightning. However, Muktsar and Fazilka witnessed a few rainfalls.

Wednesday

The weather conditions will remain rainy on Wednesday as well. Regions including Pathankot, Hoshiarpur, Rupnagar, and Mohali will witness very heavy rainfall.

Gurdaspur, Jalandhar, Kapurthala, Nawanshahar, Ludhiana, Fatehgarh Sahib, and Patiala will witness heavy rainfall. Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Ferozepur, Moga, Barnala, Sangrur, and Mansa are expected to witness moderate to light rainfall.

Bhatinda, Faridkot, Muktsar, and Fazilka will witness no rainfall.

Thursday

All the regions will witness moderate to light rainfall, and there is no alert across the state.

July 25, 2025

Friday

All the regions will witness moderate to light rainfall, and there is no alert across the state, except Fazilka, Muktsar, Mansa, and Bathinda, which will be witnessing zero rainfall.

Weather conditions in Himachal -

July 22 witnessed a massive downpour, which resulted in a flood-like situation in the states of Northern India, including Himachal Pradesh and Punjab. The weather condition was so bad that it resulted in a landslide, which killed some people, along with devastating roads and the supply of electricity.

In addition to this, traffic flow was also disrupted on the Chandigarh-Manali Highway. Reportedly, several regions, including Banjar, Pandoh, and Larji, witnessed flooding.

Detailed devastation in HP -

In Chamba, around 400 roads were blocked, including major highways.

In Mandi, around 242 roads were blocked.

In Kullu, around 55 roads were blocked.
