Police arrest bride’s ‘Dharam Father’ during Anand Karaj in Faridkot, sparks high-voltage drama

Family alleges man was forcibly taken away during wedding ceremony; police say he was wanted in transformer and agricultural motor theft case

A wedding ceremony in Faridkot’s Sandhwan village was disrupted by a dramatic police action after officers allegedly took away the bride’s father figure during the Anand Karaj ceremony. The arrest triggered a commotion at the venue, with family members reportedly confronting the police and an individual even lying down in front of the police vehicle in an attempt to stop it.

According to the family, the man was forcibly taken away by personnel who identified themselves as Gidderbaha Police and were allegedly dressed in civilian clothes. Police, however, maintain that the man was wanted in a registered case involving the theft of transformers and agricultural motors.

Wedding ceremony interrupted

The incident unfolded while the wedding rituals were underway at a marriage function in Sandhwan village. Family members alleged that police personnel entered the venue during the Anand Karaj and took the man away.

The bride’s brother claimed that the family was shocked when the police arrived in the middle of the ceremony and accused their father of involvement in theft cases. He alleged that the man was taken away against their wishes and placed in a vehicle bearing a Uttar Pradesh registration number.

The arrest reportedly led to an argument and physical confrontation between the family and police personnel. In a dramatic moment, one person allegedly lay down in front of the police vehicle in an attempt to prevent it from leaving. Police personnel reportedly moved him aside and drove away with the accused.

Family says he had left such activities

Speaking to the media, the bride’s brother claimed that the man had previously been named in a theft case but had since stopped engaging in such activities.

The family alleged that police were unnecessarily implicating him in additional cases and questioned the manner and timing of the arrest, particularly during the wedding ceremony.

The allegations made by the family have not been independently established.

Police version: Wanted in transformer and motor theft case

Gidderbaha SHO Parvinder Singh gave a different account of the incident.

According to the SHO, a man identified as Garib Singh alias Raju is named as an accused in an FIR registered at Gidderbaha police station in connection with the theft of transformers and agricultural motors. Police allege that the thefts were being carried out by a gang.

The SHO said that five members of the alleged gang had already been arrested, and police received information that Garib Singh alias Raju was attending a wedding function in Sandhwan.

Acting on the information, a police team reached the venue and arrested him. The SHO said the team consisted of both uniformed and plain-clothes personnel.

Police deny assault allegations

The family had alleged that the man was manhandled during the arrest. The SHO denied the allegation, stating that police personnel did not assault the accused.

Instead, he claimed that members of the accused’s family engaged in a physical confrontation with the police during the arrest.

The SHO also clarified that the arrested man was not the bride’s biological father, but was serving as her dharam father.

Arrest taken on record

Police said the accused’s arrest has been formally recorded at Kotkapura police station, while further legal proceedings are underway.

The incident has raised questions over the timing and manner of the arrest, as the action unfolded during a major family ceremony. While the family has questioned the police action, investigators maintain that the arrest was carried out on the basis of an existing FIR and information regarding the accused’s presence at the wedding.

The allegations from both sides will now be examined as the investigation and legal proceedings progress.
