Facing an inflated electricity bill? Here’s what PSPCL has decided

Domestic consumers get relief as PSPCL keeps default-based disconnections in abeyance

Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) has decided to keep disconnections of domestic supply (DS) electricity connections on hold in cases where outstanding dues have resulted from incorrect or inflated billing.

In a memo dated September 28, 2026, PSPCL said the decision was taken after several consumers were billed on an average or assumptive basis due to the recent strike by meter readers and the ongoing migration of its SAP/Non-SAP systems to the Oracle-based SBS system.

According to PSPCL, some consumers received incorrect or inflated electricity bills. These amounts were then showing as outstanding or defaulting dues in the system. As a result, some consumer connections were being taken up for disconnection.

The power utility said this was leading to resentment among consumers, particularly when the outstanding amount was due to incorrect billing rather than their actual electricity consumption.

Following the issue, PSPCL has directed that disconnection of DS consumer connections on account of default may be kept in abeyance with immediate effect. The suspension will continue until the SBS system is stabilised and incorrect or inflated bills are corrected.

PSPCL has also directed its field offices to ensure strict compliance with the instructions.

The decision specifically relates to disconnections arising from defaults recorded in the system amid the billing issues. It does not state that all electricity disconnections for every type of outstanding bill have been permanently stopped.

The move is aimed at preventing consumers from facing disconnection when the dues reflected against their connections may have resulted from billing errors during the ongoing system transition.
