Punjab all set to send DGP panel to UPSC soon

Currently, Gaurav Yadav is serving as the DGP and he was appointed in July 2022 but is holding the post without a regular selection through UPSC

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Saturday said the state government will soon send a list of senior police officers to the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) for appointing a regular Director General of Police (DGP) and while speaking to the media, the Chief Minister said the move comes after a long delay in making a permanent appointment to the top police post.

However he added one condition saying that Punjab’s Home Secretary should be included in the UPSC panel that shortlists officers so the state’s views are properly represented.

Currently, Gaurav Yadav is serving as the DGP and he was appointed in July 2022 but is holding the post without a regular selection through UPSC.

UPSC had reminded Punjab multiple times including in February and March 2026 to follow the Supreme Court’s guidelines and also pointed out that keeping a DGP in an “acting” role for too long is not allowed.
