CM Bhagwant Mann on migrants issue

CM Mann said, "The issue of migrants is now coming in Punjab. The child in Hoshiarpur was killed mercilessly. But, a criminal has no caste, religion, state or nation. A criminal is only a criminal and they will get strict punishment. The culprit will get punishment on a FastTrack basis. They are also our own people, but they are making them leave the state. Our (Punjabi) people are also there, like in Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Uttar Pradesh (UP)."

"They will start burning their trucks there. Your men (Opposition) are saying to remove migrants from Punjab and that some person is going to them to seek votes."

CM Mann assured that it is his government's duty to maintain law and order.

How controversy over migrants started?

On September 9, a five-year-old boy was kidnapped and killed in New Deep Nagar, Hoshiarpur. Police allege the boy was se*ually assaulted and murdered by Manke Yadav, a migrant worker from Uttar Pradesh. Arrested the same night with the help of CCTV footage, Yadav now faces trial for one of the most disturbing cases in recent memory.

But the crime’s aftershocks have spread beyond the courtroom. In over two dozen villages across Punjab, panchayats have passed resolutions targeting migrant workers , refusing to issue residence certificates, warning landlords against renting to outsiders, and calling for background checks on all parvasi mazdoors.

For example on September 19, 10 Panchayats of Jalandhar imposed restrictions on migrants.

An emergency meeting of local panchayats was convened in Daroli Kalan village near Adampur, Jalandhar. The meeting was called regarding migrant workers, and multiple decisions were also taken. Panchayats from several nearby villages participated in the meeting, and several resolutions were unanimously passed.

It was decided at the meeting that Aadhar cards and voter cards will not be issued to migrants. Those who already have their votes will be cancelled. Furthermore, no migrant will be allowed to roam around the village or at intersections at night.
