Punjab DGP Gaurav Yadav summoned by ECI over FIRs lodged during Tarn Taran bypoll

Reports suggest that DGP Yadav has been summoned over he registration of nine FIRs against Shiromani Akali Dal workers.

In a major development, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has summoned Punjab DGP Gaurav Yadav. As per reports, DGP Gaurav Yadav has been asked to visit its national headquarter in New Delhi on November 25, 2025.

Reports suggest that DGP Yadav has been summoned over he registration of nine FIRs against Shiromani Akali Dal workers during the Tarn Taran bypoll campaign.

Times of India reported that referring to a letter dated November 8 to him (DGP) and another letter dated November 11 to Punjab chief electoral officer (CEO), the EC has directed DGP Gaurav Yadav to appear before the commission at 3:30 pm on November 25 in Nirvachan Sadan, Ashoka Road, New Delhi to brief the Commission about the latest status of the matter in question.

In the letter to the DGP on November 8, the Punjab Chief Electoral officer had written, “As you are aware that Election Commission of India (ECI) had suspended the SSP Tarn Taran Dr Ravjot Grewal on 8.11.25, after taking cognisance of the serious lapses in impartial conduct during MCC period enforced as a result of announcement of Bye-election to AC (Assembly Constituency) Tarn Taran."

There are reports that Election Observer for Tarn Taran constituency has reportedly implicated the former SSP in the arrests, highlighting the coordinated FIRs across districts and the insufficient time between FIR registration and arrests to justify police action.

Reports further suggest that Punjab Police, through the DGP, had submitted a confidential sealed report prepared by ADGP Ram Singh to the ECI, which reportedly justified the actions of former Tarn Taran SSP Ravjot Kaur Grewal, who was suspended by the poll body on November 8.

It is reported that Akali Dal led by Sukhbir Badal had complained to Election Observer on the issue alleging that its party workers were being targetted by the police.
