Punjab & Haryana High Court seeks reply on regular DGP appointment, summons Chief Secretary

The court has directed the government to clarify the status and timeline of the DGP appointment, with the response to be submitted within 10 days

ASHISHPURI

The Punjab and Haryana High Court has sought a response from the Punjab government regarding the appointment of a regular Director General of Police (DGP) in the state and summoned the Chief Secretary to appear before the court on October 13.

The court has directed the government to clarify the status and timeline of the DGP appointment, with the response to be submitted within 10 days.

During the proceedings, the court observed that the post of DGP is of considerable importance as it is directly linked to the law-and-order administration of the state. The court further questioned the continued functioning of the post through an additional charge and indicated that such an arrangement cannot continue indefinitely.

The matter concerns the appointment of a full-time DGP for Punjab. The court’s directions come amid questions over the continuation of the present arrangement and the need for a regular appointment to the senior police post.

The Chief Secretary has been asked to respond before the court on October 13, when the matter is expected to come up for further hearing.
