Punjab vigilance files 40,000-page chargesheet against Majithia; Know why

The case concerns allegations that Majithia accumulated assets beyond his known sources of income during the period under investigation

The Punjab Vigilance Bureau filed a chargesheet running into approximately 40,000 pages against senior Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader and former Cabinet minister Bikram Singh Majithia in a disproportionate assets case before a Mohali court on August 22, 2025.

What is the chargesheet about?

The chargesheet contains documents related to financial transactions, bank accounts, company records and properties allegedly linked to Majithia and his associates, and according to reports quoting the prosecution, investigators examined around 400 bank accounts and recorded statements from more than 200 witnesses.

The documents were submitted to the court in four sealed trunks.

What is the case about?

The case concerns allegations that Majithia accumulated assets beyond his known sources of income during the period under investigation.

What is VB saying?

The Vigilance Bureau has alleged that assets worth approximately Rs 700 crore were linked to the case and these are allegations made by the investigating agency and have not been established as guilt by a court.

Majithia’s arrest

Majithia was arrested from his Amritsar residence on June 25, 2025.

The case was registered under the Prevention of Corruption Act following findings reported by a Special Investigation Team investigating an earlier drug-related case.

Other developments

In a subsequent development, the Supreme Court granted Majithia bail in the disproportionate assets case on February 2, 2026 and the court took into account his period in custody, the filing of the police report and other circumstances of the case.

What does this mean?

Bail does not amount to acquittal, and the allegations remain subject to judicial proceedings. A Punjab and Haryana High Court record published in January 2026 listed the case before the Mohali court, with charges yet to be framed at that time.

What does the record list?

The record also listed 273 witnesses. The filing of the chargesheet marked a major step in the investigation, but the case must proceed through the court process before any finding of guilt can be made.
