Punjab Weather: Why This November Feels Colder Than Last Year

Clear skies, cold winds from the Himalayas, and longer nights have brought an early winter chill to Punjab.

Punjab is experiencing a sharper nip in the air this November. Mornings and evenings have turned noticeably colder, with minimum temperatures dipping between 7°C and 12°C across several districts a significant drop compared to what residents usually feel at the start of the month.

While the India Meteorological Department (IMD) is yet to release a detailed city-wise comparison between November 2024 and November 2025, current trends clearly indicate that winter has arrived early across North India, with Punjab feeling the chill sooner than expected.

Why Punjab Feels Colder This Year: The Key Weather Factors

1. Clear Skies and Rapid Heat Loss
For more than a week, Punjab has witnessed clear, cloud-free nights. This allows surface heat to escape quickly — a process known as radiational cooling resulting in lower night temperatures.

2. Dry, Cold Northwesterly Winds
Since the first week of November, cold and dry northwesterly winds from the western Himalayan region have been flowing steadily into Punjab. These winds carry a natural chill, pulling down temperatures in the plains.

3. Longer Nights in Late Autumn
As November advances, nights grow longer, giving more time for the ground to cool. Combined with dry air and light winds, this leads to a sharper drop in early morning temperatures.

With the IMD predicting another fall in mercury over the coming week, residents can expect foggy mornings, chilly evenings, and perhaps one of the coldest starts to winter in recent years.
