Railway tracks under surveillance: ISI-linked terror module busted in Punjab, 9 arrested

Police suspect that the accused were allegedly receiving directions from foreign-based handlers and were being trained to carry out activities

A major security breakthrough in Punjab has exposed an alleged cross-border terror network operating with the support of Pakistan’s intelligence agency ISI. Amritsar Commissionerate Police has busted two alleged international-linked terror modules and arrested nine suspects, including four minors.

Revelation of a disturbing pattern

The investigation has revealed a disturbing pattern — surveillance of railway tracks through CCTV cameras, collection of illegal weapons and preparations involving petrol bombs. Police suspect that the accused were allegedly receiving directions from foreign-based handlers and were being trained to carry out activities aimed at disturbing peace in Punjab.

Recovered items

The recovery of three illegal pistols, nine live cartridges and four petrol-filled bottle bombs has raised serious security concerns. According to police, the suspects were allegedly assigned tasks including reconnaissance of sensitive locations, arranging weapons and gathering information about security establishments.

Useful CCTV footage

The use of CCTV cameras near railway tracks has emerged as one of the biggest revelations in the case. Investigators believe the footage was allegedly being shared with handlers sitting abroad to monitor sensitive movements and activities.

Youth being drawn towards terror networks

The case has also highlighted the growing threat of youth being allegedly drawn into terror networks. With four minors among those arrested, security agencies are now investigating how these individuals were contacted, influenced and brought into the alleged network.

Expansion of the probe

Separate FIRs have been registered at Mohkampura, Airport and C Division police stations in Amritsar. Police are now expanding the probe to identify other members linked to the network, trace funding sources and uncover possible foreign connections.

Spotlight on Punjab’s security challenges

The latest development once again puts the spotlight on Punjab’s security challenges, where agencies are facing the task of countering evolving terror strategies while preventing vulnerable youth from becoming part of such networks.

Deeper investigation

The investigation continues as authorities look deeper into whether the arrested suspects were connected to any previous terror-related activities or planned attacks in the state.
