In a major step aimed at improving survival chances for road accident victims, the government has rolled out a system under which seriously injured people can receive cashless treatment of up to ₹1.50 lakh for seven days at empanelled private hospitals. Alongside free treatment, the initiative also provides a ₹25,000 incentive to individuals who immediately take an accident victim to a hospital, encouraging people to step forward instead of hesitating in emergencies.
47 Private Hospitals Empanelled Under the Scheme
The Health Department has tied up with 47 private hospitals across the state for the initiative. According to the information, the facility is available not only to Punjab residents but also to people from other states.
Importantly, no specific insurance card is required to avail the treatment. The victim can get the treatment started by providing an identity document.
First 60 Minutes Can Make the Difference
The initiative places particular emphasis on the first hour after a road accident, often referred to as the ‘Golden hour’. During this period, rapid medical intervention can be crucial, particularly in cases involving severe bleeding or head and internal injuries.
The scheme therefore seeks to remove one of the biggest hurdles in such situations — uncertainty over who will take the injured person to a hospital and who will bear the immediate treatment cost.
₹25,000 Incentive for Those Who Save a Life
Under the Rahveer Scheme, a person who takes a seriously injured road accident victim to one of the designated government or empanelled private hospitals can become eligible for an incentive of ₹25,000.
The process requires details of the person who brought the victim to be recorded in the hospital and police verification report. The person will then have to provide Aadhaar and bank account details. After verification by the RTO department, the incentive amount will be transferred directly to the beneficiary's bank account.
Treatment Available for Up to Seven Days
Under the PM Relief Scheme and Rahveer Scheme, seriously injured road accident victims admitted to hospital can receive cashless/free treatment worth up to ₹1.50 lakh for seven days.
The scheme was implemented from August 15, and the newspaper report states that three injured people had already benefited from the Rahveer component in the initial period.
Focus Shifts From Treatment Alone to Saving Lives
The significance of the initiative goes beyond providing financial assistance. Road accident victims often lose critical time because bystanders hesitate to intervene, while families may also worry about the immediate cost of emergency treatment.
By combining cashless treatment with a financial incentive for rescuers, the government is attempting to address both problems simultaneously. The real test, however, will be how effectively the system works on the ground and whether accident victims can actually reach the empanelled hospitals quickly enough to benefit from the golden-hour window.
The 47 empanelled hospitals are expected to provide the emergency support needed to turn the scheme from a policy announcement into a potentially life-saving intervention.
