Tarn Taran Byelection date announced, Punjab set to witness 5-cornered poll

Tarn Taran Byelection date has been announced and it is all set to be 5 cornered poll with Congress, AAP, BJP, SAD and Akali Dal (Waris Punjab De) in fray

The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Monday announced Tarn Tara Byelection dates. Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar announced that Taran Taran Byelection will also be taking place apart from Bihar Elections 2025.

Voting for Tarn Taran Bye-election will take place on November 11 and counting of votes will take place on November 14. The Tarn Taran assembly seat fell vacant after the demise of MLA Dr. Kashmir Singh Sohal.

Tarn Taran Byelection Candidates

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge has approved the candidature of Karanbir Singh Burj Burj has served as the Vice President of the Congress Kisan Cell and is a senior Congress leader in the district.

He has also been the State Vice President of the Congress Kisan Cell. Burj is associated with the Tarn Taran area and has been continuously raising local issues and farmer problems in the region. He is considered a supporter and close associate of senior Punjab Congress leader Pratap Singh Bajwa.

The BJP has fielded Harjit Singh Sandhu, a former Akali and Youth Akali leader, as its candidate. Since December 2022, he has been serving as the BJP district president of Tarn Taran.

He is considered to have a strong hold in local politics and the party organization. Harjit Singh Sandhu began his political career in 2007 with the Shiromani Akali Dal’s youth wing but joined the BJP ahead of the 2022 Assembly elections.

Aam Aadmi Party has picked Harmeet Singh Sandhu as their candidate. He left the Akali Dal and joined AAP. He is a former member of the Punjab Legislative Assembly and represented Tarn Taran from 2002 to 2017.

The Shiromani Akali Dal has fielded Principal Sukhvinder Kaur Randhawa as its candidate in the Tarn Taran by-election. She is a prominent leader of the “Azaad group.”

Under her leadership, candidates from her local group have contested municipal elections, and as a result she has significant support: 43 sarpanches, 8 municipal councilors, and several former chairpersons are aligned with her.

Because of this, her public base is considered very strong. Sukhvinder Kaur has previously worked as a school principal, which gives her an image among locals of being a social worker with disciplined leadership.

He is likely to contest election from jailed-MP Amritpal Singh's party Akali Dal (Waris Punjab De).

Giani Harpreet-led Akali Dal may also extend their support to Amritpal Singh's candidate.
