A major road accident took place on the PAP-Amritsar Highway when a tipper truck fell from a flyover near JC Resort. The incident created panic among commuters, but a major tragedy was averted as no pedestrians or other road users were injured.
Preliminary information about the accident
According to preliminary information, the accident occurred while the tipper driver was attempting to avoid a bus that had broken down and was parked on the flyover. The sudden movement led to the driver losing control of the vehicle, following which the tipper crashed through the flyover and fell onto the road below.
Disrupted traffic movement
Soon after the accident, a long queue of vehicles was witnessed on the highway, causing disruption to traffic movement. On receiving information about the incident, a team from the Road Safety Force reached the spot and initiated rescue and traffic management operations. The police called a crane to remove the overturned tipper and bring it back to its position. Efforts were also made to clear the road and restore normal traffic flow.
Conversation with the driver
Sharing details about the incident, tipper driver Diljinder Singh said that a bus belonging to “Nankana Sahib” was standing in a damaged condition on the flyover. He alleged that the bus driver had failed to place any warning signboard or indicator near the vehicle, which could have alerted other motorists.
According to Diljinder Singh, a container vehicle was approaching from behind and collided with the stationary bus. Following this, the container hit his tipper, causing the heavy vehicle to lose balance and fall from the flyover. He said that the accident caused significant damage to the tipper and claimed that he suffered a fracture in his arm during the crash.
Statements by the police official
A police official, while providing details about the incident, confirmed that the accident occurred due to a broken-down bus parked on the flyover. The official said that the tipper overturned due to the obstruction created by the stationary vehicle.
The police added that there was no loss of life in the accident. The damaged bus was also removed from the spot with the help of a crane, after which traffic movement was gradually restored on the highway.
Appeal to the authorities
Authorities have urged commuters to remain cautious while driving on highways, especially near stalled vehicles, and stressed the importance of placing warning signs to prevent such accidents. The incident once again highlights the need for proper road safety measures and timely assistance for vehicles that break down on busy routes.
