A video of Varinder Ghuman, the world’s first vegetarian bodybuilder from Jalandhar, Punjab, has surfaced, showing him speaking with doctors prior to undergoing surgery. In the footage, Ghuman can be heard requesting, “Recover me fast, I want to exercise soon. My body is out of shape, and I want to resume training as quickly as possible.”
The video was shared on Instagram by social media content creator Rabbi Bajwa, who stated that Ghuman had no known health issues and alleged that his untimely demise resulted from medical negligence during surgery. Ghuman, standing at 6.5 feet and weighing 150 kg, was a dedicated vegetarian athlete who had represented India internationally, earning medals and consistently upholding the honor of the national flag.
Surgery Details and Ghuman’s Final Statements
Prior to the procedure, Ghuman emphasized the importance of a swift recovery, noting that while the surgery may be routine for the general public, it was critical for him as a professional athlete. The attending physician explained that three of Ghuman’s muscles had suffered strain and minor tears, which would be repaired using minimally invasive techniques. Open surgery was presented as a contingency should the initial procedure prove insufficient.
Ghuman expressed confidence in the surgical team, stating that he was in “the safest hands,” and requested prayers for a successful outcome. He highlighted his desire to regain peak physical condition following a brief period out of form.

Rabbi Bajwa, who released the video, noted that Ghuman’s contributions and sacrifice should be widely acknowledged. Plans are underway to release a Hindi-language film celebrating his life and achievements. Additionally, Bajwa announced the establishment of the Varinder Ghuman Foundation, aimed at supporting aspiring athletes, providing free gym facilities, and creating memorials in Ghuman’s honor.
Bajwa further appealed to the Government of India and Prime Minister Narendra Modi to commission a high-level medical investigation into Ghuman’s case and ensure appropriate accountability for any medical negligence.
He concluded by emphasizing that Varinder Ghuman’s legacy transcends his personal achievements: “Highways, memorials, and statues should commemorate his contributions. While he is no longer with us, his name and spirit will endure, inspiring generations of young athletes.”
