A controversy has erupted over the functioning of Police Post Paragpur after a video allegedly showing an altercation between a complainant and the police post in-charge, ASI Hardyal, went viral on social media. The incident reportedly followed allegations that a complaint regarding suspected drug-related activity in Nangal village was not being acted upon.
Congress leader Angad Dutta also confronted the police over the alleged inaction, with a video of the exchange circulating online. Now, Jalandhar Police has issued a clarification, stating that the incident stemmed from a fight between two parties and that no drug-related complaint had been received in connection with the matter so far.
Viral video shows alleged altercation between complainant and police officer
According to the allegations, a man named Karan had reportedly apprehended a person suspected of drug trafficking in Nangal village, under Jalandhar Cantonment, two days before the controversy surfaced.
The incident allegedly involved the suspected drug supplier escaping after an assault. Following this, Karan reportedly approached the police to lodge a complaint against the person.
However, allegations emerged that the complainant had visited the police post repeatedly over three consecutive days but his complaint was not registered.
A video subsequently surfaced on social media, allegedly showing an argument between the complainant and ASI Hardyal when he approached the police post to submit his complaint.
Congress leader Angad Dutta confronts police over alleged inaction
The controversy escalated after Congress leader Angad Dutta visited the police post and questioned the action taken against the person allegedly caught in connection with the suspected drug supply.
In a video circulating online, Dutta can be seen questioning ASI Hardyal about the case and asking whether senior officials had contacted him regarding the matter.
During the exchange, the ASI reportedly stated that no drug trafficker had been brought to him. The argument intensified, with the officer allegedly asking Dutta to complain to whoever he wanted.
The video also shows the officer getting up from his chair and asking for the recording to be stopped.
Police post in-charge gives a different account
Following the controversy, ASI Hardyal reportedly stated that the incident involved a dispute between two parties in the village.
According to his explanation, one party had initially submitted a complaint to Duty Officer Surjit, while Karan, representing the other party, approached the police post later.
The officer claimed that he asked Karan to submit a written complaint, following which an argument broke out.
He further stated that both parties would be called again and their statements recorded.
Regarding the video recording inside the police post, the officer said that he had requested Dutta not to record videos inside the premises, which led to the disagreement.
ADCP Madhvi Sharma clarifies police position
Amid the growing controversy, ADCP City-2 Madhvi Sharma, PPS, issued a clarification on September 25, stating that the viral video contained allegations against the Police Post Paragpur in-charge regarding alleged reluctance to act against a person suspected of drug-related activities.
She clarified that, according to the police, a fight had taken place between two parties in Village Nangal Karar Khan on the evening of September 21, 2026.
Following the incident, both parties were admitted to a hospital, and the police received the Medico-Legal Reports (MLRs) of both sides.
The ADCP stated that necessary legal proceedings were being carried out based on the medical reports.
Police says no drug-related complaint received so far
Addressing the allegations of drug involvement, Madhvi Sharma said that no information or complaint regarding drug-related activities had come to the police's notice in connection with the incident so far.
However, she clarified that the drug-related angle would also be thoroughly investigated.
She added that if any facts or evidence regarding drug involvement emerged during the investigation, appropriate legal action would be taken in accordance with the law.
Police appeals against circulation of unverified claims
Jalandhar Commissionerate Police has appealed to the public not to draw conclusions or circulate unverified information based on viral social media videos.
The police stated that the facts of the matter were being verified and that appropriate action would be taken based on the findings of the investigation.
While the viral videos have raised questions about the handling of the complaint and the conduct of the police post in-charge, the police have maintained that the case involves a dispute between two parties and that the alleged drug-related angle remains under investigation.
