What's behind the protest threat by Jalandhar's Dilkusha market traders?

A dharna will be staged at Company Bagh Chowk on Wednesday if the Power Department fails to restore uninterrupted electricity supply by Tuesday evening.

A protest threat was given by the Dilkusha Market traders to the authorities on Monday i.e. 6 July 2026, for not providing efficient supply of electricity. Shopkeepers of Dilkusha Market have alleged that repeated electricity outages and transformer faults are severely affecting their businesses, prompting the market association to announce a protest if the situation is not resolved immediately.

Protest details

Dilkusha Market Association president Rishu Verma said a dharna will be staged at Company Bagh Chowk on Wednesday if the Power Department fails to restore uninterrupted electricity supply by Tuesday evening.

Cause of the protest:

Talking to the media, Rishu Verma informed that they have been going to the authorities requesting uninterrupted supply of electricity in the market from last summer. However, temporary fixes were made each time. He added that to maintain the cool chain for the medicines, AC and fridge are of the utmost use. Prolonged power outages increase the risk of medicines getting damaged, leading to heavy financial losses.

According to him, meetings were held with the SDO, XEN, JE and other department officials, during which they repeatedly requested that the electricity load issue in the market be addressed. However, despite repeated assurances, the problem continues to persist. He said the department has been replacing transformers, but the underlying issue remains unresolved. Even after fresh complaints were submitted this year, traders claim no permanent solution has been provided.

The association president further alleged that electricity remained disrupted for two consecutive days last week. Although officials reportedly informed traders on Saturday that the problem had been rectified, transformer faults resurfaced on Tuesday morning. According to Verma, loud sparking noises were heard from the transformer twice, raising concerns about public safety and the possibility of another prolonged outage.

He said traders have given the department until Tuesday evening to carry out the necessary repairs. If the issue is not resolved within the stipulated time, market representatives and shopkeepers will gather at Company Bagh Chowk on Wednesday to stage a peaceful protest against the Power Department.

Other problems

Verma also claimed that low voltage and recurring power disruptions have already damaged several air conditioners, refrigerators and other electrical appliances belonging to shopkeepers. He said many traders have suffered financial losses of crores due to equipment failures and spoiled stock. He added that all the billing procedures take place on computers and all these appliances have had major damage due to voltage fluctuations.

The association has urged the authorities to take immediate corrective measures and ensure a stable electricity supply, especially during the ongoing summer season when uninterrupted power is essential for both businesses and consumers.
