Will banks in Punjab, other Indian states remain closed on Jan 23 over Basant Panchmi?

Basant Panchami aka Vasant Panchami is celebrated on the first day of spring, which is the fifth day of the Hindu month of Magha. This year, Basant Panchami will be celebrated on January 23. The day is also dedicated to Goddess Saraswati. Devotees celebrate Saraswati Puja on this date.

Notably, January 23 is Friday, hence the coming days are Saturday and Sunday. Notably, this year January 26 is on Monday. It means, on Monday, there will be national holiday.

In Punjab, banks will remain open on January 23, 2026. According to RBI's Holiday calendar, there will be bank holidays on January 23 in- Agartala, Bhubaneswar, and Kolkata.

Banks will remain closed on January 23 in the aforementioned regions over- Birthday of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, Saraswati Puja, and Vir Surendrasai Jayanti, and Basant Panchami.

January 2026 gives Punjab the fewest bank holidays and only one official gazette holiday on Republic Day.

Banks in Punjab will remain closed on these days, as per the RBI circulars:

January 10: Second Saturday off.

January 24 - Fourth Saturday off.

January 26 Monday: Republic Day, only national gazette holiday

Sundays like the 11th and 25th of January are regular weekly holidays.
