Will Punjab witness fog during Lohri 2026 celebrations?

Lohri is a joyous midwinter harvest festival that marks the close of the winter solstice and welcomes longer, brighter days.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) of Chandigarh unit on Tuesday issued a red, orange and yellow alert for very dense to dense fog. On Tuesday morning, a dense fog along with biting cold weather were witnessed in multiple districts of Punjab including Jalandhar.

Notably, on January13, Punjab is celebrating Lohri 2026. Lohri is a joyous midwinter harvest festival that marks the close of the winter solstice and welcomes longer, brighter days as the Sun starts its northward movement.

On Lohri, families come together to lit bonfires made from wood and cow dung cakes, a sacred ritual usually performed in open spaces or outside homes. Many also visit their relatives or loved ones' house to celebrate the festival.

Now, the question arises will Punjab witness very dense to dense fog while celebrating Lohri or not.

Punjab Weather Prediction on Lohri 2026

According to IMD Chandigarh's latest prediction, all district of Punjab are on red, orange and yellow alert for very dense to dense fog.

  • January 13- (on red alert for very dense fog at many places)- Ferozepur, Moga, Faridkot, Bathinda, Muktasar, and Fazilka

(on orange alert for very dense fog)- Gurdaspur, Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Ludhiana

Rest of the districts are on yellow alert

  • January 14- (on orange alert)- Gurdaspur, Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Moga, Bathinda, Muktasar, Faridkot, Ferozepur, and Fazilka

Rest of the districts are on yellow alert

  • January 15- All districts are on yellow alert

  • January 16- Except,, Ferozepur, Faridkot, Bathinda, Mansa, Muktasar, and Fazilka, all districts are on yellow alert

  • January 17- Except,, Ferozepur, Faridkot, Bathinda, Mansa, Muktasar, and Fazilka, all districts are on yellow alert

Will it be foggy during Lohri celebration?

Weather website AccuWeather has predicted that Jalandhar is likely to witness hazy evening, followed by low clouds. Since, Jalandhar is on orange alert for dense fog, it is expected that fog will start to settle late at night. However, the weather website also outlines that there will be cloud cover in Jalandhar starting from 7 pm.

AccuWeather has also predicted similar weather for Ludhiana. Notably, the weather website predicts that between 6 pm to 9 pm there will be no clouds. It means, fog may start intensify from late at night as Ludhiana is also on orange alert.

Amritsar will too remain cloudy in the evening and fog may start to settle in the district as it is also on orange alert dense fog.

Therefore, it may be said that although fog may not be very dense during Lohri celebration, but dense to very dense fog is likely to envelop Punjab.
