In a major crackdown against drug menace, the district police on Wednesday busted an interstate racket of smuggling of poppy husk to Punjab and arrested two brothers besides seizing three quintal of poppy husk hidden in a special cavity of truck.

The accused have been identified as Jagmohan Singh and Sewa Singh of village Pulara, Gurdaspur.

In a press release, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Harkamalpreet Singh Khakh told that district police was keeping a close vigil on the activities of Narcotics smugglers active in Pathankot. He said that special checking teams were formed under the supervision of SP Manoj Kumar and DSP Rajinder Minhas along with other police officials.

Khakh added that the police teams while patrolling in the area stopped a truck on suspicion immediately and while checking, the cops recovered three quintal of poppy husk hidden in the special cavity of truck and took two accused into custody on the spot.

SSP further stated that the accused in preliminary investigation revealed that they were habitual smugglers and had dozen of criminal cases registered against them in different police stations. They smuggled this consignment from Jammu and Kashmir and now they went to call their customers in the area to deliver it. He told that every time, these smugglers opt a new modus operandi to hide these drugs.

SSP said that the accused were booked under sections various sections of NDPS Act in this fresh case. He added that the accused would be produced in the local courts and would be taken on remand for further interrogation racket to arrest the remaining members of the racket.
