4G mobile services restored in Jammu and Kashmir after 18 months

The government has restored 'high-speed' 4G internet in Jammu and Kashmir in the wake of "overall security situation" on Friday.

According to Access Now's "Keep It on Report, 2019" India has more internet shutdowns than any other country. It recorded 121 internet shutdowns across India in the year 2019. The most stringent internet shutdown was reported in Jammu and Kashmir and as per several reports it is one of the longest internet blackouts in the world.

The government has restored 'high-speed' 4G internet in Jammu and Kashmir in the wake of "overall security situation" on Friday. The government had snapped internet after Article 370 was abrogated in the region and later on 2G services were restored but the use of internet remained restrictive in the region.

Home department of Jammu and Kashmir ordered, "advice of special committee (constituted on advice of Supreme Court)" and after a careful review of overall security to "revoke the restrictions on mobile data services and fixed the internet connectivity,...except to the extent that pre-paid mobile SIM card holders shall be provided internet connectivity only after verification as per norms applicable for postpaid connections."

LG Majoj Sinha, Jammu and Kashmir approved the restoration of services.
