Kartarpur Corridor: India reschedules its meet with Pakistan

Pakistan’s response awaited on certain concerns: MEA

New Delhi: On Friday, India rescheduled its April 2 meet on Kartarpur Corridor with Pakistan at Wagah. MEA also sought for clarifications regarding key proposals from Pakistan on the Kartarpur Sahib Corridor, as per reports. 

A statement issued by Ministry of External Affairs stated, “India has also shared concerns and sought clarifications on reports that controversial elements have been appointed by Pakistan to a committee to be associated with the Kartarpur Corridor. It has been conveyed that the next meeting on the modalities can be scheduled at an appropriate time after receiving Pakistan's response."

Foreign Office spokesperson Mohammad Faisal said, “Pakistan regrets the Indian decision to postpone the upcoming Kartarpur meeting, jointly agreed by both sides on 14 March 2019,” He added, “The meeting was to discuss and find consensus on outstanding issues.”

In the meantime, India proposed to hold another meeting of technical experts in mid-April in order to take forward the infrastructure development for the Corridor in an expeditious manner. The meeting is being held to resolve the outstanding issues at the zero point that was agreed to at the last meeting, the statement read.

The statement also ensured that the Government of India is committed to realise the long pending demand of the Indian pilgrims to visit the holy Gurudwara Kartarpur Sahib through the Corridor in a safe, secure, smooth and easy manner.

Kartarpur Corridor, a proposed border corridor is proposed to connect the Sikh shrines of Dera Baba Nanak Sahib and Gurudwara Darbar Sahib Kartarpur. Despite the fact that people on the Indian side of the border can physically see Gurudwara Darbar Sahib in Pakistani based Kartarpur, the pilgrims are currently covering a 125 km journey by bus to Lahore to get to Kartarpur.
